Dental Wellness Trust - Afrika Tikkun 2012 While in Capetown in December Dr Cohen from Redbourn Dental Practice, decided to experience first-hand some of the work The Dental Wellness Trust is involved with. Joining Linda (his wife), a dentist from Hampstead who has started the Trust, and he persuaded some fellow Londoners to join him on a trip to Delph Township in the heart of Cape Flats. We arrived at African Tikun in Delft. Afrika Tikkun is an international NGO that provides education, health and social services to children, youth and their families through centres of excellence in South African Townships. The founders, the late Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris and philanthropist and businessman Dr Bertie Lubner, believed the organisation should focus on children as they were the future of the country. The organisation’s credibility won the support of the then President Nelson Mandela as its Patron-in-Chief. Initially Tikkun concentrated on dealing with the day-to-day needs of children. We were met by some of the most devoted and charming people. We immediately entered a room filledwith over two hundred children and after the teacher had warmed the audience to our presence. Linda conducted an interactive Question and Answer session on dental health, eating and cleaning habits. We then broke up into groups and after every child was given their own cleaning kit we conducted one and one instruction. Doing a quick assessment of all the children, I would say approx. 96% of them had tooth decay. The kids loved it and so did we as we watched them learn for the first time how to look after their dental health with their own tooth brushes. We distributed around 1000 toothbrushes. We were treated to a song by all and then had a guided tour around the centre where we found a vegetable garden (the main challenge was to prevent the produce from being stolen!) and a computer centre . Most moving was a visit to the kitchen where people are able to obtain meals which in that part of the world is already a big win. We learnt that many of the kids do not have father figures at home to act as mentors and that many other are suffering from aids.
