Teddy Bears' Picnic 2 May 2005
A Teddy Bears' Picnic was held on the
NickyLine at the Millennium Park at
Redbourn on Bank Holiday Monday May 2nd 2005.
The
NickyLine is the disused railway line running between Hemel Hempstead and Harpenden. It is cycle route 57 on the National Cycle Network as
designated by Sustrans, the agency dedicated to promoting Sustrainable
Transport.
Rangers set of from both ends of the
NickyLine; one group setting off from where it crosses Queensway in Hemel Hempstead, one group setting off
from the Hollybush Lane road steps in Harpenden. The Rangers were on
their bikes, with their teddy bears, and were dressed as Train drivers
and guards. Children were invited to bring their teddies on their bikes with
their picnics and their parents to join the 'Bear Train'! They could pick up
the 'train' anywhere along the route. The two trains set off at
11.30 from both ends and aimed to meet at the Millennium Park in Redbourn
about 12.30.
At the Millennium Park we all had our picnics. There were
entertainments, including a Best-Dressed Teddy Competition and Cycling
Games. There were displays by Sustrans and local authors Sue and Geoff
Woodward who had copies of their book 'The
NickeyLine ' for sale.
The return trip was at about 3pm.
it was great fun and it was all free!
