A Jam Factory

webb3aharb.jpg

Russel Harborough was a Redbourn grocer who took up Mr Gladstones Challenge to turn the household jam-making into a commercial undertaking.

Mr Harborough was very successful in his kitchen and was forced to build a 49 foot long factory next to his house. A more modern factory was later built on the site. He also produced marmalade, sea-side rock and sweets.

In 1956 the jam factory was taken over by Thomas Mercer Ltd, Marine Chronometer manufacturers who made air guages on the site.
