Redbourn Folk Club
The Redbourn Folk Club, formerly known as The Hollybush Folk Club, was established over twenty years ago and meets on Thursday evenings from 8:30 pm to 11:15 pm in the Old School Room at The Hollybush Public House, Church End, Redbourn (near St Albans) Herts AL3 7DU.
Now moved back its Hollybush residence, the Redbourn Folk Club was started over 20 years ago by Linda Fryd and originally met at The Engineer pub in Harpenden. The club has always maintained a fairly wide ranging music policy featuring traditional and contemporary folk, blues and many of today's singer-songwriters. Guests have included many well known names from the folk scene, along with lesser known and local performers. The club has also taken an active role in the St Albans Folk Festival and in 2000 featured Jeremy Taylor as their special Festival Guest. There are a number of regular performers at the club including Martin Dent (Luton based singer-songwriter), Chris Lawrance (bluegrass and old-time singer, guitarist and banjo player), Run of the Mill (local vocal duo Jenny
Mc Naught? and Alan Halse), Richard Scruton (blues/folk and half of 'Rich Pickings'), and Malcolm Hobbs (multi instrumentalist and singer).
There is a charge of £4-£8 for guest nights and £2 for singers nights - get there early to ensure a floorspot.
Redbourn is a small village situated not far from the M1 Junction 9.
Leaving the motorway at Junction 9 south, turn left at the slip road roundabout towards St Albans on the A5183. Continue straight over the first roundabout (with Harpenden up the hill to your left – B487) and go straight over the next roundabout towards Hemel Hempstead with St Albans sign-posted to your left. Take the first turning to your right into Chequer Lane, which comes to a crossroads at the lower end of Redbourn Common. Continue across the crossroads and bear left into Church End. The Hollybush Public House is near the far end of the lane on the right hand side. There is a car park to the rear of the pub which offers a warm welcome and serves a range of real ales.
