We are a group of volunteer residents in Redbourn who have come together of under the umbrella of the East Common Project with the ultimate aim of refurbishing the East Common Play Area. East Common is a very popular area for families and residents in Redbourn but is now sorely in need of resurfacing and refurbishment.
..
The East Common Project spent last year consulting with children in Redbourn. Volunteers went into Redbourn Junior School as well as local youth groups. We received over 100 responses which we used to put together a new play scheme for East Common. At the Scout fete in the summer we were able to do an initial consultation with the public and used the feedback to “polish” the draft plans. It is right to say that everyone we had the opportunity to speak to were in favour of the refurbishment.
The aim of the project is not only to meet the wishes of the residents and children of the village but importantly, to meet the following aims:
- To provide a local play area suitable for children of all ages.
Currently, the play areas in Redbourn provide play equipment for children averaging five to six years old or younger. There are very few, if any, outdoor play areas for older children. The scheme specifically provides play equipment suitable for older children.
- To provide a play area for families
As well as equipment for older children, the scheme incorporates a dedicated toddler area as well as smaller equipment for five to eight year olds. In this way families with children of all ages are able to enjoy East Common.
- To provide an all-inclusive area
At present there are extremely limited opportunities for children will special needs or limited abilities to play in Redbourn. Our scheme incorporates specific Disability Discrimination Act compliant equipment as well as providing a bonded path to and within the play area suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
At the moment there is no shelter at East Common from the elements. The scheme incorporates a sheltered seating area which will not only provide rain cover but will also provide a sheltered picnic and seating area for visiting families.
- To be sympathetic to the Common
The current equipment is dated brightly coloured metal. Our scheme is a natural wood area with landscaping and planting so that it is sympathetic to one of Redbourn’s most beautiful areas,
Redbourn Common.
The current scheme has now been presented to the Parish Council. They are in full support and have dedicated £10,000 towards the project.
The scheme will cost approximately £75,000. This will be raised through a combination of grants, corporate sponsorship and local fundraising. The group have recently put on a local quiz night which was sold out and are currently planning a Nearly New Sale, a Band Night, a Christmas fete for local children and a sponsored bicycle ride from Redbourn to Epernay (400 miles in four days!). All these events will contribute towards our final total which we hope to achieve in the next 12 months.
This is a vital community project which will meet a clear need and has the backing not only of residents but of the Parish Council. We welcome all residents to our next meeting on the 13 November 2012 at Redbourn Parish Centre. Come along and help in any way you can to build a new playground for the children of Redbourn.
